Chapter 2, case #6, p. 58 (HPV) and (2) Chapter 3, case #4, p. 83 (Mrs. S)

The assignment is to first read the chapters and then to write a critical essay on each of the above 2 case studies. The paper for Each case should be 2 pages in length – i.e., at minimum, 1.5 pages; maximum 2.5 pages. Please be attentive to the maximum as well as to the minimum. A cover page is not needed. Also, please begin the second case on a new page. The point is for you to read the case studies critically and then offer a response from the perspective of the ethical principles covered in the particular chapter. Thus, the perspective of the first case study would be autonomy / informed consent, while the second case study concerns the principles of beneficence / nonmaleficence as well as the principle of proportionality. Please do not repeat the facts of the case (I know what they are). Instead, state what you see as the key ethical principle(s) involved in the case and immediately dive into your analysis and response to the questions raised by each case. The assignment is looking for your ability to grasp ethical principles and then to apply them to a specific case study. Also, recognize that practically all ethical issues involve a tension or conflict between two competing ethical principles/values. For example, patient autonomy can be in tension with the beneficence of the health care example, patient autonomy can be in tension with the beneficence of the health care professional, or with the paternalism of society (i.e., laws). In your analysis, you might address how you see any tensions being appropriately (or, inappropriately) resolved. That is, which ethical principle/value appears to be the stronger one in each case? Simply responding to the questions at the end of the case without any analysis is an inadequate completion of the assignment and will be assessed accordingly. Obviously, the only data you have regarding the cases is that which is given. Every reader will necessarily “fill in the blanks” of the case by making some assumptions about the unknowns. Simply tell me what you assume (i.e., how you “read” the case and why) and go from there. Your reading needs to be reasonably based upon the data given in the text. When you directly quote Baillie, simply use the form “pp”. Use 12 front double spaces, essay-style (no bullet points), and please proofread carefully. Your our critical analysis is of primary importance in this assignment.
