Response: Reflection on Your Parameters of Success

Jessica Lange posted Dec 13, 2021 5:35 PM

Have your parameters for identifying a high-performing or successful organization changed over the course? Why or why not?

My parameters for identifying a high-performing or successful organization haven’t changed but did grow from my original response. In module one, I spoke about how an organization is successful when they have low turnover, show their employees that they’re part of the bigger picture, and value our time and knowledge through open collaboration and communication. This idea of organizational culture and capabilities throughout this term highlighted how important it is, especially in a merger and acquisition. “Understanding our current state with respect to organisational capabilities and planning, our interventions, with due consideration, will enable us to balance short-term results with longer-term sustainable performance (Bititci, 2015).”

As a leader, what are some performance factors and future trends you will consider for developing a high-performing team and organization?

Performance factors I’ll consider when developing a high-performing team and organization, especially in my field of marketing, is this quote from Umit Bititci, “What is perhaps most important, however, is that we keep on communicating, reviewing and re-prioritising as the plan unfolds. This is the only way we can learn!” Performance reviews, including purposeful milestones and consistent conversations about reaching those milestones, will be in my team and organization. I want to be a leader, and in being a leader, you are delegating tasks but supporting your team to complete those tasks: the more communication, the better in marketing. I’ve had managers that communicate the plan, expect you to execute it, and then you meet at the end of a completed project. Then I’ve had marketing managers who would set deadlines (or milestones) to complete individual smaller tasks to a larger project. These smaller deadlines would include a touchpoint meeting where discussions of what is working and what may not be working are discussed. I’ve always preferred the latter in my project communications with my manager.

The future trends I will consider are enterprising dynamics and demographic and social changes. “As more and more businesses are now conducted online, it can be expected that there will only be more dramatic and speedier changes in business models and value chains in the years to come (Esposito, 2018).” When I first entered the field of marketing, there were two major categories, marketing and digital marketing. Now, eight years into my profession, it is just marketing, and you’re expected to know its digital aspects. Enterprising dynamics, including technology, are changing the future of the workplace, and a high-performing team needs to adapt, learn and perform. Also, demographic and social changes have never been more prevalent in the workplace. We keep hearing about the great resignation and how people are now valuing their work-life balance more. During 2020 and 2021, you saw many people leaving the cities to live in suburban areas. A high-performing team and organization need to understand these changing demographics and social changes to support their employees.
