For this Performance Task Assessment, you will select a health issue or health behavior (e.g., vaping) that affects demographically different populations, and then create public health communication strategies—an infographic, poster, or 1-page flyer and a 30-second public service announcement (PSA) script—to educate your selected populations about a specific health topic and/or health behavior. You will develop a total of four (4) strategies: two print materials and two PSA scripts, one of each for each selected population. You will then briefly describe how you plan to implement the strategies based on best practices.

Professional Skills: Written Communication and Inquiry and Analysis are assessed in this Competency.

Your response to this Assessment should:

  • Reflect the criteria provided in the Rubric.
  • Adhere to the required assignment length.

This Assessment requires submission of three (3) files: Communication Strategies Assessment Template and Print Material for your selected populations. Save each file as follows:

  • PU4005_Comm_Strategies_Assess_Template_firstinitial_lastname (for example: PU4005_Comm_Strategies_Assess_Tempmlate_J_Smith).
  • PU4005_PrintMaterial_listA_firstinitial_lastname (for example: PU4005_PrintMaterial_listA_J_Smith)..
  • PU4005_PrintMaterial_listB_firstinitial_lastname (for example: PU4005_PrintMaterial_listB_J_Smith).

You may submit a draft of your assignment to the Turnitin Draft Check area to check for authenticity. When you are ready to upload your completed Assessment, use the Assessment tab on the top navigation menu.

Before submitting your Assessment, carefully review the Rubric. This is the same Rubric the Assessor will use to evaluate your submission, and it provides detailed criteria describing how to achieve or master the Competency. Many students find that understanding the requirements of the Assessment and the Rubric criteria help them direct their focus and use their time most productively.

Communicating Health Information to Diverse Populations

You work for the Health Education and Community Transformation Division of Durham County Public Health, which “provides a variety of learning opportunities that encourage voluntary adoption of behaviors and supports policies and changes to the environment that promote health and prevent disease and disability” (Durham County Public Health, n.d., para. 1). There are several public health education projects scheduled to launch at the beginning of the next fiscal year. You have been assigned to develop one of the public health education projects. Select from the list of priority health topics/health behaviors below that you would like to develop:

  • Physical activity
  • Tobacco use or tobacco cessation
  • Vaping behavior
  • Stress management
  • Pregnancy and parenting
  • Healthy eating
  • Disease management

To meet the needs of the community, you need to develop education materials on the health topic/health behavior you selected for two (2) high priority populations. Select a population from List A and from List B, below, that would benefit from the health communication materials that you develop:

List A

List B

  • LGBTQ populations
  • Seniors
  • Adolescents (ages 12–17)
  • African American adults
  • Young adults (ages 18– 26)
  • Hispanic immigrants
  • Military families
  • Family caregivers (i.e., family members who are caring for an ill and/or disabled parent, grandparent, or child(ren).

Using the evaluation criteria in Module 1 Learning Activity 2, evaluate at least three (3) information sources related to your health topic and populations (one resource for the topic and one resource per population).

To ensure the health messages are appropriate for each population, you need to create two separate sets of two strategies for each population, for a total of four (4) strategies.

First Strategy

The first strategy must be a print material. You can select from a list of options (see below); however, once you choose a type of print material, you must use the same type for both populations. For example, if you choose to create an infographic as your print material, then you need to use it for both populations that you selected. Choose one (1) of the following printed material options for both populations that you selected:

  • Infographic
  • Flyer (1 page)
  • Poster

Second Strategy

You will create a public service announcement (PSA) script for both populations as well. Your second strategy will be two (2) different scripts for a 30-second PSA related to your selected health topic/behavior, one for each population. For each of the strategies, you are expected to address/apply the following:

  • Health literacy
  • Literacy
  • Cultural appropriateness
  • Health behavior theory

Note: Use images appropriately in your print materials. Do not copy and paste images from the Internet, as this is a copyright issue. You can either ask permission of the owner of the image, create your own graphic, or find one from one of the many resources that offer free, royalty free images.

The print material will be uploaded as a separate file and the following will be in the Communication Strategies Assessment Template:

  • The PSA scripts
  • Your selected populations
  • Your selected health topic/behavior
  • Your evaluations of information sources
  • How you addressed literacy, culture, and theory
  • A brief narrative regarding the importance of using a comprehensive planning process to create effective health communication strategies

When you are finished, upload both files.
