Find a visual artifact that interests you and promotes a positive social change. This may be an ad, graffiti art, social media post, or another medium.
2. Analyze its use of ethos, pathos, and logos. What was included in the visual artifact that reaches and moves the audience to create change?
You might consider such things as use of:
- color
- texture/surface
- images
- size of the art work
- display area
- allusions to other art
- and/or shapes
You may also want to consider whether people were included in the piece. If so, who? Why do you think this person was included in the art work?
Thinking back to Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People:
- Does the person’s stance convey any meaning?
- Are there any images that symbolize something?
- What do the person’s/people’s clothes seem to signify?
- Examine…
- diction used
- sound
- use of camera angle/lens
- use of statistics
3. What elements make it a particularly useful way to reach the community?
POSSIBLE ORGANIZATION:
Para 1: Background Information: tell your audience about the artwork in enough detail that they can visualize it. You should also include information about the artist (if available), and the movement and why it is important.
Para 2 & Para 3: Select from the various things to consider list above and develop two paragraphs that logically discuss those points in relation to the art work and the use of ethos, pathos, logos.
For example:
Para 2 Color & Texture (impact on developing ethos/pathos/logos) or Para 2 Ethos (use of statistics & images)
Para 3 Images & Placement (impact on developing ethos/pathos/logos) or Para 3 Pathos (use of color & sound)
Para 4: What elements make it a particularly useful way to reach the community? How did it impact you? How successful do you think it is? Why?
If you are unsure about where to find an artivism work, consider doing a Google search for San Diego Street Art or San Diego Graffiti Art for possible art to write about.
