Final Argumentative Research Essay- 40 points
Topic: 4-Day Workweek: Reducing the Days We Commit to Work
Choose ONE position:
Position 1: The Negative Effects of the 4-Day Workweek
Position 2: The Positive Effects of the 4-Day Workweek
Your essay and your Thesis should clearly show the position you chose about shortened workweek and its effects.
Length: 6 paragraphs typed/ double-spaced: Introduction (5-6 sentences), 3 Supporting Body Paragraphs (6-9
sentences each), Refute Paragraph (5-7 sentences), and a Conclusion (4-6 sentences).
Research/ Sources: As a research paper, it should have quotes and references from outside sources as supports to your
claims (your reasons as well as to the refute).
In your essay, you should refer to/ use/ quote from the 2 texts I provided, and you should also do research using
Google Scholar and/ or LAVC Library Database for credible information and find 2 credible sources.
You should use 2-3 citations from the provided texts and 2-3 citations from the researched sources.
Researched Sources: 2 credible sources (article, book, journal, news, scholar essay) Use LAVC Library Academic
databases and/or Google Scholar for the credible sources.
(Optional) You can also use 1 non-credible source: YouTube Video, Ted Speech, Poster, a visual, quote,

1. Read the assigned 2 texts/ articles.
2. Consider the Essay Prompt: choose if you are FOR or AGAINST the reduced work-week option (if
it will affect us positively or negatively).
3. List reasons for your chosen position and pick 3 good, strong reasons that you can develop each into full
paragraphs to be your Supporting Body Paragraphs.
4. Formulate your thesis (Complete or Fully-developed) which should show your argument and the 3
reasons that you will develop in the supporting body paragraphs following the order you list them in the
thesis.
5. Remember the STRUCTURE: 6 Paragraph Academic Essay: Introduction, 4 Body Paragraphs (3
Supportive Body Paragraphs, 1 Refute Paragraph), and a Conclusion.
6. The essay should follow MLA format and citation guidelines for in-text citations and Works Cited page

Here is how to Structure of your paper:
INTRODUCTION 5-6 sentences
Hook / Attention Getter (the 1st sentence)
Choose one of these starters!
Rhetorical Question- a questions that makes the reader think and thus engages and interests to
read the essay
General Statement (Aha! Yea!) – a statement that the reader will agree with and thus will be
interests to read the essay
Bold Statement (Hm! What?!)- a short, straight forward opinion statement that may startle /
interest the reader
Fact/ Quote/ Stats -an interesting fact, quote or statistics/data about the topic that may interest
the reader
Introduce the Topic (the middle of the Introductory paragraph)
Provide general information about the overall topic, a background information, different considerations of the
options of the topic, etc.
Thesis Statement: Complete or Fully-developed Thesis (the last sentence of the Intro. paragraph)
Present your choice of the prompt / your argument about the effects of the shortened/ 4-day workweek and
3 supportive reasons /effects that support your choice/ argument. You may also start the Thesis with the
counter-argument
if you are doing a Fully-developed Thesis.
BODY PARAGRAPHS
3 Supporting Body Paragraphs (6-9 sentences each) and a Refute Paragraph (5-7 sentences)
Each Supporting Body Paragraph:
Topic Sentence – that states the main idea of the paragraph / one of the reasons/ effects stated
in the thesis (in the same order)
Supportive sentences- explanation, more details about that reason/ effect, quotes, and
personal or general example
Closure/ Closing Sentence- sums up your explanation of that reason/effect and thus provides
a conclusion to that paragraph
Refute Paragraph – considering the opposite choice/ the counter-argument
Acknowledge the opposite choice of the prompt as possibly preferred / considered by some
people
Validate by showing 1 or 2 possible advantage(s) of the opposite choice.
Prove – include a quote / fact about that benefit/ advantage of the opposite choice
Dis-validate / Refute by showing that the advantage mentioned above has also disadvantages
OR state that one of your
reasons/ effects (of the supporting Body Paragraphs) actually outweighs the
advantage of the opposite choice.
Re-establish your choice– restate that your choice is therefore better for consideration.
CONCLUSION- 4-6 sentence
Loop: Sum-up / loop back to the general topic you introduced in your Intro
Restate Thesis: rephrase your thesis / your argument (choice) of the intro and restate it again here
(you may also restate the reasons too.) One example to restate thesis is: Since 1, 2, and 3 reasons; thus, your
argument.
“Call for Action”: end your essay with a suggestion of what to do/ consider OR with a quote / fact/
question/ exclamation statement (any of these) to leave a lasting impression to the reader
