Instructions

For this assignment you will write a 1200 word paper about a specific piece of artwork. Through the essay, you will show understanding of the artwork through providing a description (visual analysis), use of terminology, discussion of techniques, explanation of historic and cultural context, and discussion of iconography.

*Any art from Prehistoric times through the 14th century only will be appropriate.*

Format

1. First, introduce the reader to the work by identifying (title, artist, year, location, etc.). Include a THESIS STATEMENT that will tie your paper together. (This statement should especially relate to your closing.)
2. Second, inform the reader of material and specific techniques the artist uses to create the work. It is important that the reader understands the significance of innovative use of materials and technical implications.
3. Next, discuss the work through a visual analysis. Describe the work and analyze the individual design elements and principles, such as, but not limited to, composition, color, line, texture, scale, use of space and proportion. Focus on creating a logical order so that the reader does not get lost. (This should take several paragraphs.)
4. Once the reader has a mental image of the work, discuss the Iconography or Iconology. Describe particular elements that occur throughout the work (an object, action, gesture, pose etc). Either, explain how and when that same element occurs in other objects through history and how this representation of it is unique, or describe what that element means generally in art or to art historians.
5. Discuss how the object fits into a particular stylistic category. This is where you would want to include a comparison with another artwork. Compare and Contrast two works in either the same or very different stylistic categories. The stylistic analysis relates the larger historical trends and forces in the culture and how they influenced the development of the piece.
6. In your closing, look beyond or through the object toward theoretical, historical, or social contexts of the object, artist, or time period. Speculate on how the formal or stylistic qualities of the object reflect or affect the time in which they were made. More specifically, look at the artwork’s relationship to ideas about gender, class, artistic creation, culture, or politics associated with that time.
7. Include a list of “Works Cited” using the documentation style of your choice (MLA, Chicago, APA, etc.). It is imperative that you cite your research and have a separate list of sources at the end of your paper.
